Little House on the Prairie ended its nine-season run in 1983, but its stars were far from finished. Some found even greater fame, while others left Hollywood behind. Here is where life took the cast after Walnut Grove.

Michael Landon Found Another Television Home

Michael Landon moved directly from playing Charles Ingalls to creating and starring in Highway to Heaven. The uplifting drama reunited him with Victor French and ran for five seasons between 1984 and 1989. Landon died from cancer of the liver and pancreas on July 1, 1991, leaving behind an extraordinary television legacy.

Melissa Gilbert Built A Life Beyond Laura

Melissa Gilbert remained busy in television movies and later served two terms as president of the Screen Actors Guild. She briefly ran for Congress in Michigan but withdrew from the race in 2016 because of complications from a spinal injury. Gilbert has since settled in upstate New York, co-founded the lifestyle company Modern Prairie, and returned to television in When Calls the Heart.

Karen Grassle Returned To Her First Love

Karen Grassle left her regular role as Caroline Ingalls before the final season and turned much of her attention back to theater. She performed with companies in cities including Santa Fe, Louisville, and San Francisco while continuing to accept occasional screen roles. In 2021, Grassle published Bright Lights, Prairie Dust, a candid memoir about her career and years on the series.

Melissa Sue Anderson Chose A Quieter Path

Melissa Sue Anderson continued acting after leaving Mary Ingalls behind, appearing in productions including The Equalizer and Murder, She Wrote. She eventually moved to Canada with her husband, television producer Michael Sloan, and concentrated on raising their family. Anderson revisited her childhood career in the 2010 memoir The Way I See It.

The Greenbush Twins Left Acting Behind

Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush had shared the role of Carrie Ingalls since they were very young children.
