Midnight Wings And Uneasy Instincts
Travis Barker boarded the private charter in Columbia, South Carolina on the night of September 19, 2008. The Blink-182 drummer and now Kardashian husband admitted later that he had long harboured a fear of flying and even joked he was “sure I would die in a plane crash."
Not this time, but it was closer than he would have liked.

The Flight That Went Wrong
On take-off from Runway 11 at Columbia Metropolitan Airport the aircraft experienced tire failures during take-off. The plane had already exceeded decision speed, but the pilots made the split-second decision to try and abort the take-off. It was too late.
The plane overran the runway, smashed through a fence, and tumbled across a highway before crashing into an embankment.

Flames, Fuel, And Survival Instincts
Once he escaped the wreckage, Barker recalled hearing someone yell, "Stop, drop, and roll" He didn't even realize that he was doused in jet fuel and aflame. He later said he screamed, “Are we alive?” to his friend and collaborator Adam Goldstein, who lay next to him, as the plane exploded behind them.
One Of Only Two Survivors
Of the six people on board, only Barker and Goldstein survived. Two other passengers and both pilots lost their lives in the crash. Barker eventually made the long road to recovery, but Goldstein died of an overdose less than a year later.

The Physical Cost Of Escape
Barker sustained third-degree burns over approximately 60-65 % of his body and was placed in critical condition. He required dozens of surgeries and skin grafts during his recovery.
Demons Behind The Drums
In his memoir Can I Say: Living Large, Cheating Death, and Drums, Drums, Drums, Barker wrote that the crash became his wake-up call. He described how he had been immersed in a reckless lifestyle and how the event forced him to confront mortality.

Months In Hospital, Years Of Healing
Barker spent more than 11 weeks in hospitals and burn centres. He recalled hearing talk that his foot might be amputated because he did not have enough healthy skin for grafts.
Guilt, Loss, And The Weight Of Survival
He developed post-traumatic stress disorder and struggled with survivor’s guilt — especially because someone not originally scheduled to fly was on board and died. Barker said that was part of his ordeal.
A Drummer’s Return To The Kit
Despite his injuries, Barker returned to drumming. He said when he sat behind the drum kit again, it felt “like riding a bike,” and it confirmed to him that he still had his “chops.”
Fear Of Flying That Wouldn’t Quit
Flying remained a trauma trigger. In a 2023 interview he said: “It takes a little piece of my life every time I fly … the amount of stress and anxiety it causes is just unbearable.”

A Different Kind Of Comeback
