Hollywood’s Most Convincing Illusion
They offered comforting advice, protected their families, and made fatherhood look almost effortless. Away from the cameras, however, several of Hollywood’s most familiar dads faced estrangement, addiction, infidelity, or accusations from their own children. The closer we get to number one, the darker these family stories become.
#25. Martin Sheen
As President Josiah Bartlet on The West Wing, Martin Sheen played a protective father to three daughters while also becoming a reassuring paternal figure for his staff. Offscreen, Sheen’s alcoholism affected his four children, and Emilio Estevez witnessed his father’s frightening breakdown during Apocalypse Now. The family nevertheless remained close and later spoke openly about surviving those difficult years together.

#24. Laurence Fishburne
Laurence Fishburne’s Furious Styles in Boyz n the Hood became one of modern cinema’s most respected fathers, teaching his son about responsibility and survival. Fishburne’s relationship with daughter Montana became strained after she entered the adult entertainment industry at 18. Montana later described their estrangement publicly, although she also credited him with believing in her during childhood.

Sylvester Stallone played determined fathers in Over the Top and Rocky V, the latter opposite his real son Sage. Stallone later admitted that the film’s story about a neglected son reflected reality because he had placed his career before his family. Sage said some of his emotional confrontation with Rocky came directly from his own frustration with his father.

#22. Jon Voight
Jon Voight played Nicolas Cage’s scholarly father, Patrick Gates, in National Treasure, eventually joining his son’s dangerous historical adventure. In real life, Voight experienced a lengthy and highly public estrangement from daughter Angelina Jolie. Their relationship deteriorated further after Voight discussed her mental health publicly, although they later made occasional attempts at reconciliation.
#21. Anthony Hopkins
Anthony Hopkins portrayed troubled but memorable fathers in Legends of the Fall and his Oscar-winning drama The Father. His only child, Abigail, said she sometimes saw him merely once a year after he left the family. Hopkins has admitted that he was not a good father, and their estrangement has now lasted for more than two decades.

#20. Gene Hackman
As Royal Tenenbaum in The Royal Tenenbaums, Gene Hackman played a long-absent father attempting to reconnect with his three adult children. Offscreen, Hackman admitted that his demanding acting career sometimes kept him away from Christopher, Elizabeth, and Leslie. His children remembered him lovingly after his death, but Hackman carried regrets about the family moments he had missed.

#19. Will Smith
Will Smith gave audiences an inspiring portrait of fatherhood opposite his real son Jaden in The Pursuit of Happyness. His relationship with eldest son Trey was far more complicated after Smith divorced Trey’s mother, Sheree Zampino. Smith later acknowledged that Trey felt abandoned and betrayed, although father and son eventually worked hard to rebuild their bond.

In Daddy Day Care, Eddie Murphy played a devoted father who discovers that caring for children is considerably harder than it looks. Murphy has ten children, and most have spoken warmly about him. However, his relationship with Angel, his child with Melanie Brown, began with a public paternity dispute and years of limited involvement before reportedly improving.

Donald Sutherland portrayed the emotionally overwhelmed Calvin Jarrett in Ordinary People, one of cinema’s most memorable examinations of a struggling father. Following his separation from Shirley Douglas, son Kiefer grew up primarily in Toronto. Kiefer later explained that he did not truly get to know his famous father until he left home at 15.
#16. Clint Eastwood
Clint Eastwood played complicated fathers in films including Trouble with the Curve and Million Dollar Baby. His real family was even more complicated: he fathered eight known children with six women. Some grew up with limited contact, while eldest daughter Laurie did not learn that Eastwood was her biological father until adulthood. They later developed a close relationship.

Kirk Douglas appeared alongside son Michael and grandson Cameron in It Runs in the Family, playing the difficult patriarch of a multigenerational household. His youngest son, Eric, described feeling overshadowed and emotionally neglected within the Douglas family. Kirk and Eric experienced painful clashes before Eric’s death in 2004.
#14. James Caan
As Walter Hobbs in Elf, James Caan played an emotionally unavailable father who eventually realizes what his son truly needs. His relationship with actor Scott Caan followed its own difficult path. Both men acknowledged that addiction and instability complicated Scott’s childhood, though they later repaired their bond and even played father and son in Mercy.

#13. Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin portrayed fathers in movies including It’s Complicated and voiced the overwhelmed dad in The Boss Baby. His relationship with daughter Ireland became tabloid material during his bitter custody battle with Kim Basinger. In 2007, a leaked voicemail captured Baldwin insulting the then-11-year-old, an episode he later described with profound regret. They subsequently reconciled.
#12. Arnold Schwarzenegger
In Jingle All the Way, Arnold Schwarzenegger played a father frantically trying to compensate for repeatedly disappointing his son. Real life produced a much more painful failure. Schwarzenegger secretly fathered his son Joseph Baena during an affair with household employee Mildred Baena and hid the truth for years. He later admitted that the revelation caused all five of his children tremendous pain.

For six seasons, Robert Young played calm, wise Jim Anderson on Father Knows Best, creating one of television’s most enduring paternal ideals. At home, Young battled alcoholism and severe depression, struggles largely hidden from viewers. His four daughters experienced a father very different from the endlessly patient man who appeared in American living rooms each week.

Ozzie Nelson did not merely play a fictional father on The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet; his wife and sons played themselves beside him. Behind the wholesome image, Ozzie exercised tremendous control over the family’s careers and public presentation. Ricky Nelson later pushed against that carefully managed identity while trying to establish an independent life.

On I Love Lucy, Desi Arnaz played Ricky Ricardo, the exasperated but loving father of Little Ricky. Offscreen, alcoholism, infidelity, and constant work damaged Arnaz’s marriage to Lucille Ball and destabilized family life. Daughter Lucie later said one of her proudest memories was seeing her father finally acknowledge his alcoholism and seek help near the end of his life.
#8. Michael Landon
As Charles Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, Michael Landon became the comforting father millions wished they had. His affair with young makeup artist Cindy Clerico ended his second marriage and deeply hurt several of his children. Daughter Cheryl later wrote that his decision to leave the family was more than some of them could bear.
#7. Christopher Plummer
Christopher Plummer’s Captain von Trapp transformed from an intimidating widower into a loving father in The Sound of Music. Plummer’s relationship with his only child, actress Amanda Plummer, took much longer to develop. He acknowledged that he saw her only once during her first 21 years, blaming his immaturity and the collapse of his marriage to Tammy Grimes.
#6. Henry Fonda
Henry Fonda portrayed dependable fathers in Spencer’s Mountain and, much later, the difficult Norman Thayer Jr in On Golden Pond. Jane Fonda described spending much of her childhood trying to win affection from an emotionally distant father. Peter Fonda similarly remembered Henry as remote, leaving both children to navigate family tragedy with little emotional reassurance.
#5. Anthony Quinn
Anthony Quinn played powerful patriarchs in films such as The Children of Sanchez and A Dream of Kings. He also fathered 13 children with several women across a sprawling and frequently disrupted personal life. Some of his children later described long absences and the difficulty of sharing a famous father whose romantic relationships repeatedly reshaped the family.

#4. Charlie Chaplin
In The Kid, Charlie Chaplin created one of silent cinema’s most touching father-and-child relationships alongside Jackie Coogan. Chaplin later became a father to 11 children, but his home life could be rigid and intimidating. Son Charles Chaplin Jr recalled a distant, controlling parent whose enormous fame dominated the household and made ordinary closeness difficult.
#3. Marlon Brando
As Vito Corleone in The Godfather, Marlon Brando embodied a patriarch whose devotion to family existed alongside terrifying violence. Brando fathered or adopted at least 11 children, many raised across different countries and households. His complicated family endured addiction, mental illness, Christian Brando’s manslaughter conviction, and daughter Cheyenne’s devastating death in 1995.
#2. Bing Crosby
Bing Crosby frequently projected reassuring paternal warmth, including as the widowed father returning to college in High Time. His eldest son Gary presented a devastatingly different portrait in the memoir Going My Own Way, alleging severe physical punishment (often using a belt) and constant humiliation. Brother Phillip disputed Gary’s account, making Crosby’s private legacy a bitter family argument that never fully disappeared.
Tragically, all four of his sons struggled with severe addictions later in life, and two of them took their own lives.
#1. Ryan O’Neal
Ryan O’Neal and daughter Tatum appeared wonderfully together as a con man and his possible daughter in Paper Moon. Behind their Oscar-winning chemistry was a profoundly troubled family. Tatum and Griffin later alleged neglect, violence, and exposure to substances, while multiple children became estranged from him. Asked whether he had been a bad parent, O’Neal finally conceded, “I suppose I was.”
