Then His Sister Karen Was Murdered
In 1975, Grammer’s younger sister Karen was abducted and murdered in Colorado Springs. She was 18 years old. The crime devastated him completely. Grammer later identified her body and had to tell their mother what had happened. He later confessed, “For a long time, the grief was so dominant that I couldn’t access happiness".
Karen’s Death Haunted Him For Decades
Grammer and Karen had been close, and her murder became the central wound of his life. He later said his grief, guilt, depression, and substance abuse were deeply tied to her passing. The tragedy was not something he simply survived once. It stayed with him.
He Carried Guilt No Brother Should Carry
Grammer has spoken about feeling responsible because he was her older brother, even though he could not have stopped the crime. That kind of survivor’s guilt can become unbearable. For him, it turned grief into something more complicated and punishing.
Down the road, he told Vanity Fair, “I know a lot of people who’ve lost their siblings and blame themselves. It’s hard to explain. It’s not rational. But it happens anyway".
He Eventually Wrote A Book About Karen
In 2025, Grammer published Karen: A Brother Remembers, a memoir focused on his sister’s life, death, and enduring presence in his memory. He said he wanted to give Karen back her life on the page, not let her be remembered only for the way she died.
Another Family Tragedy Followed
The losses did not stop with Karen. In 1980, Grammer’s two half-brothers, Stephen and Billy, lost their lives in a scuba-diving accident. Stephen’s body was recovered, while Billy’s was not. For Grammer, it was another unimaginable blow in a family already scarred by grief.
The Pattern Of Loss Was Almost Unthinkable
By the time Grammer was still a young man, he had lost his grandfather, his father, his sister, and two half-brothers. Any one of those tragedies could have shaped a life. Together, they created a backstory of repeated trauma that is difficult to fully comprehend.
