Hollywood Family Math Can Get Very Strange

Casting asks audiences to believe plenty, but some screen families require unusually generous suspension of disbelief. Cher Was Only Three Years Older Than Meryl Streep

In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Cher plays Ruby Sheridan, mother of Meryl Streep’s Donna. Only three years separate the performers, making the family tree one of the sequel’s most obvious bits of movie magic.

Angelina Jolie Was Barely Older Than Colin Farrell

Oliver Stone’s Alexander cast Angelina Jolie as Olympias, mother of Colin Farrell’s Alexander. Jolie was 29 and only about a year older than Farrell, creating one of the most extreme parent-child age gaps in a major Hollywood production.

Angela Lansbury Was Roughly Three Years Older Than Laurence Harvey

Angela Lansbury was frequently cast older than she really was, and The Manchurian Candidate pushed that tendency remarkably far. She played Raymond Shaw’s formidable mother despite being only about three years older than Laurence Harvey.

Lea Thompson And Michael J. Fox Were The Same Age

Back to the Future had a built-in excuse for unusual age casting: time travel and makeup. Lea Thompson played Marty McFly’s mother Lorraine even though Thompson and Michael J. Fox were both 23 when they filmed the movie.

Jenifer Lewis Was About Two Years Older Than Angela Bassett

In What’s Love Got to Do With It, Jenifer Lewis played the mother of Tina Turner, while Angela Bassett starred as Turner. Lewis was only about two years older than Bassett, an early example of the matriarch roles that became a major part of her career.

Estelle Getty Was Younger Than Bea Arthur

The Golden Girls may have the ultimate sitcom example. Estelle Getty played Sophia Petrillo, mother of Bea Arthur’s Dorothy Zbornak, even though Getty was slightly younger; makeup, a wig, and deliberately dowdy clothes helped transform her.

Elizabeth Taylor Was Only Four Years Older Than Dennis Hopper

Giant spans years in the lives of its characters, allowing the cast to age dramatically on screen. Elizabeth Taylor eventually plays mother to an adult son portrayed by Dennis Hopper, although Taylor was only about four years older than him.

Sally Field Was Only A Decade Older Than Tom Hanks

Glenn Close Was About Nine Years Older Than Mel Gibson

In the 1990 film Hamlet, Glenn Close played Queen Gertrude opposite Mel Gibson’s Prince Hamlet. Their characters were mother and son, but only about nine years separated the actors, leaving performance and presentation to create the generation gap.
