On October 16, 2024, singer and former One Direction member Liam Payne tragically died after a fall from a hotel balcony. Here's what we know so far.
He Was In Buenos Aires
Liam Payne was staying at the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina when the incident happened.
He Was Visiting His Girlfriend
Payne had been in Argentina for a while, since at least the beginning of October. He was visiting his girlfriend, Kate Cassidy.
He Had Been In The Hotel For "Two Or Three" Days
Although Payne had been around Argentina, he had only been in the CasaSur Palermo hotel for "two or three" days. Up until October 16, 2024, no issues seemed to have occurred. That all changed in the late afternoon of the 16th.
There Was A 9-1-1 Call
Around this time, the chief receptionist at the hotel, a man named Esteban, called 9-1-1 and said that there was a hotel guest "who has had too many drugs and alcohol" and said to the responder, "we need you to send someone please".
He Was Agitated
The 9-1-1 caller also said that while Payne was "conscious" he was also agitated, and was "trashing the entire room," which, aside from the concerns about his health, was another reason they were calling. Sadly, there was more to the story.
The 9-1-1 Caller Was Worried He Was A Danger To Himself
The 9-1-1 caller mentioned in the middle of the call that "I don’t know whether his life, may be in danger, the guest’s life. He is in a room with a balcony and well, we’re a little afraid that he…" before getting cut off by the responder.
Responders Arrived
The 9-1-1 responder sent a crew out to check on Payne, but when they arrived, tragedy struck. At around 5:11 pm local time, just as they came in, they heard a loud sound in the hotel's courtyard.

He Fell From The Third Floor
Payne had fallen from his balcony on the third floor and into the hotel's courtyard, suffering fatal injuries. He was just 31 years old. And then more details began to emerge.
A Hotel Guest Gave Further Detail
Fellow hotel guest Doug Jones was in the hotel at the time of the incident and nearby Payne's room. He reported that he'd heard, "a lot of noise, like heavy lifting, like banging, a lot of loud, violent noises" prior to Payne's fall.
He also reported seeing hotel employees going in and out of what he identified as Payne's room, and then around 5:00 a "really loud, violent scream".
He Posted A Video Shortly Before The Incident
Just before the incident, Payne posted a Snapchat that said "It's a lovely day here in Argentina." The video itself, however, was from earlier in the week when he'd been spending time with girlfriend Kate Cassidy.
He Had Attended His Bandmate's Concert Just Before
Earlier in the month, Payne had attended his former One Direction bandmate Niall Horan's show in Argentina, and was seen there with his girlfriend at the Movistar Arena in Buenos Aires.
Fans Have Begun Mourning On Site
As soon as they heard the news, One Direction and Liam Payne fans began crowding around the hotel to pay tribute. As one young fan put it, "We couldn't believe it. We came here directly to confirm it was true."
He Left A Son Behind
Payne leaves behind a seven-year-old son, Bear Grey. Payne shared Bear with his ex Cheryl, who is most famous for her time in the pop girl band Girls Aloud.
Celebrity Friends Have Expressed Their Grief
There has been an outpouring of grief for Payne's tragic, sudden, and premature passing. Singer Olly Murs said he was "lost for words," while socialite Paris Hilton said "Sending love and condolences to his family [and] loved ones".
His Bandmates Have Yet To Comment
Payne's One Direction bandmates Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik have yet to comment.
Harry Styles's Mom Posted
Although Harry Styles hasn't commented yet, his mother Anne Twist has. On Instagram, she posted the words "Just a boy …" with a broken heart emoji.
There Will Be An Investigation
Police have remained tightlipped about further details of the singer's death, but there is an autopsy and an investigation to follow that should reveal more information in the coming days.
