A Stranger In His Library
Keanu Reeves spent years living in hotels, even after becoming one of Hollywood's biggest stars. When he finally bought a $5 million mansion in the Hollywood Hills, he thought he'd found somewhere to settle down. But one morning in September 2014, strange noises led him to his library, where he discovered an unfamiliar woman sitting silently in a chair. Her explanation was unsettling, but what happened just three days later was even more bizarre.

He Wasn't Like Other Movie Stars
By the late 1990s, Reeves had become a Hollywood superstar thanks to movies like Speed and The Matrix. He had the money to buy almost any home he wanted, but owning a mansion wasn't particularly appealing to him. Instead, he spent years moving between hotels and temporary accommodations, living a surprisingly simple lifestyle for someone so famous. And unlike many celebrities, Reeves had a very specific reason for avoiding permanent roots.

He Loved His Freedom
In a 2000 interview, Reeves explained that he enjoyed being able to move around without possessions tying him to one place. He even admitted that buying an enormous house might make him feel guilty because it didn't seem like something he would do. For the actor, freedom was more important than having an impressive address. But that didn't mean he was always staying somewhere ordinary.

His Hotel Was Legendary
One of Reeves's favorite places to stay was the Chateau Marmont, the famous Hollywood hotel on Sunset Boulevard. He spent years living there, joining a long tradition of celebrities who treated the landmark as their home away from home. Reeves remembered the hotel as a place filled with friendships, holidays, and memorable experiences. Yet even his fellow actors were beginning to wonder how long he could keep living out of a suitcase.

A Co-Star Noticed Something Different
While working with Reeves on Sweet November, Charlize Theron noticed that his attitude toward settling down had started to change. She later recalled asking whether he was still living in a hotel, only to discover that he was finally thinking about putting down roots. Theron believed Reeves was realizing that he could maintain his independence while enjoying a more permanent home. And in 2003, he finally took the plunge.

He Bought A $5 Million Mansion
Reeves purchased a Hollywood Hills property for nearly $5 million, a considerable change from his years of hotel living. The purchase came as The Matrix Reloaded was arriving in theaters, making it a particularly successful period in his career. Although he had owned other property interests, this was the Los Angeles home where he finally established a more permanent base. And the house itself was something special.
His New Home Was Extraordinary
The modern residence had originally been built for an art collector and featured dramatic views of Los Angeles. Inside were high ceilings, enormous walls for displaying artwork, and three fireplaces. Outside, the property included a koi pond, a courtyard, and a 50-foot infinity pool. It seemed like the perfect place to enjoy some peace and privacy, but the actor would eventually discover that even a gated mansion wasn't completely secure.
Privacy Came With A Price
Reeves had spent years enjoying the relative anonymity of hotel living, where coming and going was part of the routine. Now he had a permanent address in one of Los Angeles's most recognizable celebrity neighborhoods. The property offered far more personal space, but it also created new responsibilities and security concerns. Those concerns became frighteningly real one September morning in 2014.
Something Woke Him Up
On September 12, 2014, Reeves was inside his Hollywood Hills home when he reportedly heard an unusual noise. It was early in the morning, and he went to investigate rather than simply ignoring the disturbance. According to contemporary entertainment reports, the sound led him toward his library. What he found there was the last thing anyone would expect to discover inside their own house.

Someone Was Waiting For Him
An unfamiliar woman was sitting quietly in a chair inside Reeves's library. She was reportedly in her 40s, and the actor had never invited her into his home. There was no indication that she was a friend or someone who had any legitimate reason to be there. And when Reeves approached her, she offered an explanation that made the situation even stranger.

She Had Come To Meet Him
According to reports citing law enforcement sources, the woman told Reeves that she had entered his home because she wanted to meet him. Somehow, she had made her way into his private residence and settled into his library, apparently hoping for a personal encounter with the Hollywood star. It was an alarming invasion of privacy, especially considering that Reeves had been home at the time. But his reaction was remarkably different from what someone might expect.
He Stayed Surprisingly Calm
Rather than confronting the woman physically, Reeves reportedly spoke to her calmly before contacting the authorities. The actor had found a complete stranger sitting inside his home, yet the encounter ended without a reported physical altercation. Officers arrived at the property after receiving a trespassing call and took over the situation. Their next decision suggested that the visitor needed more than a simple warning.
Authorities Took Her Away
Authorities confirmed that the woman was detained for a mental health evaluation following the September 12 incident. They reported that she had been behaving erratically, although no physical injuries were reported. Reeves had avoided a potentially dangerous confrontation, and the immediate situation was resolved. Unfortunately, he had no idea that another stranger would soon enter the very same house.
Three Days Later, It Happened Again
On September 15, just three days after the library encounter, a second woman entered Reeves's property without permission. This time, the actor wasn't even home when the intrusion occurred. According to authorities, the woman gained access through an unlocked door and began exploring the residence. But instead of waiting to meet the famous homeowner, she decided to make herself comfortable.
She Used His Bathroom
The second visitor reportedly entered Reeves's bathroom and took a shower. She had no permission to be inside the property, much less use the actor's personal facilities. Her behavior was unusual enough, but she wasn't finished taking advantage of her unexpected visit. Soon, she headed outside toward one of the mansion's most impressive features.

She Went For A Swim
The woman made her way to Reeves's swimming pool and decided to take a dip. This wasn't a scene from one of his movies, but an actual incident unfolding at his Hollywood Hills mansion. While Reeves was away, an uninvited stranger was enjoying the facilities of his private home. Fortunately, someone else was there to discover what was happening.
Someone Caught Her In The Act
According to court documents, Reeves's friend and editor Janey Bergam discovered the woman at the property and contacted emergency services. Bergam had worked with Reeves on his illustrated book Ode to Happiness, but this was a far more unusual situation than anything involving their creative projects. Authorities responded and took the visitor into custody. This time, however, the incident would lead to something more serious than a medical evaluation.

The Woman Was Identified
Authorities identified the second visitor as Kerry Colen Raus, a 50-year-old woman who had entered Reeves's property without permission. She was detained and placed under psychiatric observation, according to court filings reported by the Associated Press. The actor had now experienced two separate intrusions in the space of just three days. But the most concerning detail emerged when Reeves explained why he feared the woman might return.
He Feared She Would Come Back
In court documents, Reeves stated that he didn't know Raus and was concerned about his safety if she was released. According to the filing, she believed that the actor had invited her onto his property, despite his insistence that he had done no such thing. Reeves worried that this belief could lead to further unwanted visits. And rather than waiting to find out, he decided to take the matter to court.
He Took Her To Court
In early October 2014, Reeves obtained a temporary restraining order against Raus. The order required her to remain at least 100 yards away from him and his Los Angeles residence. His attorneys sought longer-lasting protection, citing concerns about her unauthorized visits and behavior. After years of avoiding permanent roots, Reeves was now dealing with a problem that had followed him directly into his home.

His Movie Career Took An Eerie Turn
The timing of the incidents was particularly strange because Reeves was preparing to release John Wick in October 2014. In the movie, he plays a retired professional whose peaceful life is shattered when intruders enter his home. Of course, the fictional story takes a dramatically different direction from Reeves's real-life encounters. But the similarities between the movie's premise and the actor's recent experiences were difficult to miss.

He Had Another Strange Coincidence
Even more remarkably, Reeves had already finished filming another movie involving unexpected visitors entering a man's home. The psychological thriller Knock Knock, directed by Eli Roth, featured Reeves as a married man whose life is turned upside down after he welcomes two unfamiliar women inside. The film was completed in May 2014, several months before the real-life intrusions. That meant Reeves had already acted out a fictional home-intrusion nightmare before experiencing his own.

The Movie Was Uncomfortably Familiar
When Knock Knock premiered in 2015, audiences watched Reeves's character make the disastrous decision to let two strangers into his house. The fictional visitors initially appear harmless, but their arrival quickly becomes the beginning of a terrifying ordeal. Reeves's real-life experiences were different because neither woman had been invited inside. Still, it was an extraordinary coincidence for an actor whose private home had recently been entered twice.

He Changed His Security
After the incidents, Reeves acknowledged that adjustments had been made to his home's security. He didn't publicly explain every measure, which was understandable given what had happened. The actor had spent years seeking a place where he could enjoy privacy and independence, only to discover how easily that privacy could be disrupted. And unfortunately, his security troubles weren't entirely behind him.
Another Unwanted Visitor Appeared
In 2023, Reeves obtained a temporary restraining order against a man accused of repeatedly entering his property without permission. According to court filings, the man had allegedly appeared at the residence several times and engaged in increasingly concerning behavior. Reeves sought court protection to prevent further unwanted contact. But before the year was over, another incident would bring unwanted attention to his home.
Intruders Entered His Mansion
In December 2023, intruders entered Reeves's Los Angeles residence and took several valuable watches. The incident was reported to authorities, adding another chapter to the actor's long history of unwanted visitors. Among the missing belongings was a personalized Rolex connected to the John Wick films. For a star who had once been content living with relatively few possessions, the loss carried a particularly unusual connection to his career.
His Missing Watches Turned Up Overseas
In 2024, authorities in Chile recovered several watches linked to Reeves during an investigation into missing valuables. The discovery included a Rolex Submariner engraved with a reference to John Wick. By 2025, Chilean authorities had handed six watches over to the FBI for their return to the actor. The recovery was an unexpected development in a case that had begun thousands of miles away in Los Angeles.
He Finally Got Some Good News
In August 2025, the FBI confirmed that valuable property recovered in Chile had been returned to its rightful owners, including Reeves. The actor sent a handwritten letter thanking the American and Chilean authorities who had worked on the investigation. His message expressed appreciation for their effort, professionalism, and international cooperation. After years of unwanted attention at his home, this was one incident that finally had a welcome resolution.
He Never Lost His Composure
Keanu Reeves spent much of his early career avoiding permanent roots, preferring hotel rooms and the freedom to move whenever he pleased. When he finally settled into his Hollywood Hills mansion, he couldn't have anticipated the extraordinary encounters that would follow. From discovering a stranger in his library to dealing with a second visitor in his swimming pool, his private life occasionally became stranger than his movies. Yet through it all, Reeves remained remarkably composed, even when the place he called home became the center of an unsettling Hollywood story.
