Three Days Before The Wedding, Everything Changed
Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland were supposed to get married on June 14, 1991. The ceremony was planned for the 20th Century Fox lot, and just days earlier, newspapers were still writing about the wedding as if it were a certainty. Then, on June 11, Roberts’ publicist announced that the ceremony had been postponed by “mutual agreement.”
It was an extraordinary ending to one of Hollywood’s most closely watched romances. But what happened next transformed a broken engagement into one of the biggest celebrity stories of the early 1990s.

She Had Become Famous Almost Overnight
Only a few years earlier, Roberts was still trying to establish herself in Hollywood. Mystic Pizza drew attention to her, Steel Magnolias earned her an Oscar nomination, and Pretty Woman turned her into one of the industry’s biggest young stars. By 1991, the Los Angeles Times was already asking how a 23-year-old actress had accumulated so much power so quickly.
Suddenly, Roberts’ movies, paychecks, clothes, and relationships were all news. That level of attention would soon become an important part of the story.

Then Came Flatliners
Roberts met Kiefer Sutherland while making Flatliners, the 1990 thriller about medical students experimenting with near-death experiences. Sutherland played the obsessive Nelson Wright, while Roberts played Rachel Mannus. According to the Los Angeles Times, the two met on the first day of rehearsal.
A movie about people recklessly pushing their limits had unexpectedly produced a real-life Hollywood romance. And things moved quickly.
Their Relationship Became Serious Fast
By August 1990, Roberts and Sutherland were engaged. Sutherland was already a recognizable star from movies including The Lost Boys and Young Guns, while Roberts was becoming one of the most bankable actresses in Hollywood. Together, they immediately attracted enormous attention.
This was not going to be an anonymous celebrity wedding tucked away somewhere private. Hollywood was watching.
They Picked A Very Hollywood Venue
The couple chose June 14, 1991, as their wedding date. Rather than disappearing to a distant resort or private estate, they planned to marry at the 20th Century Fox lot in Century City. Contemporary reports described a major Hollywood event taking shape.
Even the location seemed appropriate. Two movie stars were preparing to get married inside the machinery of the movie business itself.
Julia Was Working Through It All
At the same time, Roberts was playing Tinker Bell in Steven Spielberg’s Hook. The huge production also starred Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman and occupied multiple sound stages at Columbia’s Culver City lot. Roberts was therefore juggling one of Hollywood’s biggest movies with one of Hollywood’s most anticipated weddings.
That would have been stressful enough without anything going wrong. Unfortunately, plenty was already going wrong.
She Had Already Been Hospitalized
In May 1991, less than a month before the wedding, Roberts spent five days at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The Los Angeles Times reported that she had been hospitalized with a severe case of the flu and had temporarily stopped filming Hook.
The hospitalization later became tangled up with much wilder stories about Roberts’ state of mind. At the time, however, the documented explanation was much simpler.
The Pressure Around Her Was Enormous
Just five days before the scheduled ceremony, the Los Angeles Times published a major profile titled “The Power of Julia.” The article described Roberts as Hollywood’s leading female box-office star and discussed the immense pressure that came with maintaining that position.
The profile also casually mentioned that she was about to marry Sutherland that Friday. Within 48 hours, that assumption would be obsolete.

Then Came The One-Sentence Announcement
On Tuesday, June 11, Roberts’ publicist Pat Kingsley released a brief statement. It said that, by mutual agreement, the wedding had been postponed. No detailed explanation followed.
That lack of information did exactly what vague celebrity statements usually do. It created a vacuum, and the tabloids rushed to fill it.
Even The Wedding Dress Was Ready
The cancellation was so late that Roberts’ wedding gown was reportedly already awaiting its final fitting. Michelle Trafficante of the Los Angeles shop handling the dress told the Los Angeles Times that the gown was simply being stored after the announcement.
This was not an engagement that had quietly fizzled months before anyone noticed. The machinery of an actual wedding had already been set in motion.

But “Postponed” Wasn’t Really The Story
The initial public statement made it sound as though the couple might simply need more time. Contemporary coverage even joked about whether the ceremony had truly been postponed rather than canceled.
Whatever language their representatives used, the relationship did not recover. And the next few days made that unmistakably clear.

Then Jason Patric Entered The Story
Jason Patric was already connected to Sutherland through The Lost Boys, the 1987 vampire movie in which both actors starred. After Roberts and Sutherland split, Roberts was suddenly seen with Patric. Soon, the pair traveled together to Ireland.
To the tabloids, this was irresistible. The bride-to-be had canceled a massive wedding and apparently left the country with her former fiancé’s friend.
Ireland Turned It Into A Feeding Frenzy
Roberts and Patric’s arrival in Ireland became international entertainment news. The Los Angeles Times reported that British tabloids pursued the pair relentlessly and printed competing stories about what had caused the breakup.
Some reports blamed Sutherland. Others focused almost entirely on Patric. Very quickly, separating documented facts from tabloid embellishment became difficult.
One Rumor Became Especially Persistent
Among the most repeated stories was an allegation that Sutherland had become involved with an exotic dancer. Contemporary reporting made clear that this was a tabloid claim, not an established fact, and Sutherland later denied that version of events.
That distinction matters because the alleged betrayal became central to later retellings. The people actually involved offered a much less tidy story.
Julia Eventually Told Her Side
Later in 1991, Roberts finally addressed the breakup in an Entertainment Weekly interview summarized by the Los Angeles Times. According to Roberts, she had indeed decided she did not want to marry Sutherland. But she said Sutherland called her first and told her that he did not want to marry her either.
That detail complicates the famous image of Roberts suddenly abandoning an unsuspecting groom. By her account, both of them already knew the marriage should not happen.
She Said He Beat Her To It
Roberts said she had been preparing to tell Sutherland that she wanted out. Instead, he telephoned and delivered essentially the same message before she could. She also said his version of the conversation was considerably harsher than the one she had intended to have.
So why did history remember Roberts as the runaway bride? What happened immediately afterward provided an unforgettable visual.

The Wedding Day Came Anyway
June 14 arrived, but there was no ceremony at Fox. The studio lot that had been expected to host a celebrity wedding instead became the backdrop to a spectacular non-event. Press coverage followed Roberts and Sutherland separately while speculation exploded around them.
Then Roberts’ trip with Patric gave the story the ending every tabloid editor could have dreamed of.
Julia And Jason Became A Real Couple
Whatever the exact timing of their romantic involvement, Roberts and Patric did go on to date. In July 1991, the Los Angeles Times was already reporting sightings of them together in New York and Los Angeles following their Ireland trip.
Patric later acknowledged how dramatically dating Roberts changed his life. Suddenly, an actor who valued privacy found himself at the center of one of Hollywood’s biggest scandals.
Jason Hated The Attention
Years later, Patric described the attention surrounding the relationship as an “ultimate nightmare.” He said he had worked hard to preserve his anonymity and then became internationally recognizable within weeks simply because of whom he was dating.
It was an early example of what would soon become normal celebrity culture. The relationship itself almost became secondary to the frenzy surrounding it.
He Also Disputed The Famous Version
In a later conversation with Sutherland, Patric pushed back against some of the most dramatic stories surrounding the wedding. Discussing claims that he had been invited, then uninvited, and essentially stolen the bride, Patric dismissed that narrative as tabloid exaggeration.
That does not erase the Ireland trip or their subsequent relationship. It does show how quickly a complicated breakup had been compressed into a perfect Hollywood legend.
The Split Also Changed Their Careers
Roberts and Sutherland had been expected to work together again after their wedding. A planned Western called Renegades was being developed with the two of them attached. Once their relationship collapsed, the project began falling apart too.
The personal breakup had suddenly become a professional complication. Hollywood’s favorite young couple would no longer be packaged together.

Julia Still Had Hook Waiting
Roberts also had to return to Steven Spielberg’s enormous Hook production while the scandal followed her everywhere. The movie already had extraordinary expectations attached to it, with Roberts appearing alongside Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman.
Stories soon circulated that Roberts had been difficult during filming. She would later strongly dispute the ugliest rumors from that period.
She Called That Summer Fiction
Looking back on 1991, Roberts said much of what people thought they knew about that summer had been exaggerated beyond recognition. She specifically remembered the canceled Sutherland wedding becoming the point after which virtually everything she did was scrutinized and interpreted.
Her agent even had a name for the period: the “Fellini summer.” Reality and spectacle had become almost impossible to separate.

Her Reputation Took A Hit
Roberts had entered 1991 as America’s newest movie sweetheart. By the end of the year, coverage of her personal life had grown considerably harsher, and stories about Hook reinforced the idea that fame had become difficult for her to manage.
Yet the remarkable thing is how temporary that reputation proved to be. Roberts’ career remained enormous for decades.
The Story Followed Kiefer Too
Sutherland continued working steadily after the breakup and eventually became even more famous through 24. Still, interviews kept returning to the wedding he almost had in 1991. Years later, his attitude toward Roberts’ decision sounded remarkably different from what angry tabloid readers might have expected.
Instead of attacking her, he defended what she had done.
He Eventually Said She Was Right
Looking back, Sutherland said Roberts had shown courage by recognizing that the marriage was wrong for her. He described them as young and deeply in love, but said the wedding had grown into something far larger than the private commitment they originally imagined.
That admission changes the emotional center of the whole story. The wedding may have collapsed spectacularly, but Sutherland ultimately believed avoiding it had been the correct decision.

Fame Had Swallowed The Wedding
Sutherland later remembered the event becoming almost uncontrollable. Roberts was arguably the most famous young actress in Hollywood, and what should have been a marriage between two people had turned into an industry event surrounded by intense public attention.
In that environment, backing out three days beforehand was embarrassing. Going through with it for appearances could have been much worse.
Even Kiefer And Jason Eventually Reconnected
For years, the story made Sutherland and Patric sound like permanent enemies. But the two eventually reconciled and later publicly appeared together discussing their history. In 2021, they even joked about the Ireland episode during a joint interview.
Time had turned one of Hollywood’s biggest scandals into something its participants could finally discuss without the old hostility. That may be the most surprising ending of all.

Julia Finally Did Find A Lasting Marriage
Roberts eventually married country singer Lyle Lovett in 1993, although the marriage ended less than two years later. In 2002, she married cinematographer Daniel Moder, whom she met while making The Mexican. Their marriage has lasted far longer than the relationships that dominated tabloid coverage during Roberts’ early fame.
The woman who became synonymous with one spectacularly canceled wedding ultimately built a much quieter family life. But Hollywood never forgot June 1991.
The “Runaway Bride” Version Was Too Simple
The popular version of the story says Julia Roberts abandoned Kiefer Sutherland three days before their wedding and ran away with his friend. Parts of that are undeniably true: the wedding disappeared at the last minute, Roberts went to Ireland with Patric, and the two dated afterward. But Roberts maintained that she and Sutherland had both decided the marriage should not happen, and Sutherland later praised her for recognizing it.
Sometimes the cleaner celebrity legend survives because it makes a better headline. The real story was messier, stranger, and probably far more human.
