Dick Van Dyke learned his mother had lied about his age when he tried to join the Army. His grandmother revealed it was to hide a family scandal.

His Mother Had Been Hiding Something

When a teenage Dick Van Dyke tried to enlist during WWII, his mother made a startling confession: He was actually a year older than he'd been led to believe. She claimed she'd changed his birthday because he'd been born prematurely, but when Dick questioned his grandmother, he discovered the real reason. His parents had conceived him before they were married, and they'd altered his birthday to hide the scandal. But as Dick began piecing together the truth, he realized just how far his family had gone to keep their secret.

He Had An Ordinary Childhood

Long before he became one of America's most beloved entertainers, Dick Van Dyke was just another kid growing up in Danville, Illinois. His father, Loren, worked as a traveling salesman, while his mother, Hazel, helped raise Dick and his younger brother, Jerry. Their family life seemed perfectly ordinary, and Dick had little reason to question anything his parents told him. But there was one detail about his childhood that wasn't quite what it seemed.

His Family Had Traditional Values

Religion played an important role in Van Dyke's upbringing, particularly on his mother's side of the family. As a boy, he even considered becoming a minister before discovering his passion for performing. His family belonged to a generation when appearances mattered, especially in a relatively small American community. And years before Dick was old enough to understand those expectations, his parents had already found themselves facing a difficult situation.

He Was Surrounded By Family

Danville was a town of roughly 30,000 people, but Van Dyke remembered it feeling much smaller. Both sets of grandparents lived nearby, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and other relatives. He later joked that he could barely walk anywhere without running into someone he was related to. With so many family members living close together, it's remarkable that one particular secret stayed hidden from him for so long.

War Interrupted His Plans

By the time Van Dyke reached his teenage years, WWII had changed life across America. Young men were being called into military service, and Dick knew he would eventually face the possibility of being drafted. He wasn't particularly enthusiastic about joining the infantry, where he might find himself fighting on the front lines. Instead, he began considering a way to take control of his own future.

He Had A Plan

Van Dyke wanted to join the Army Air Forces, hoping he might have a chance to become a pilot. He figured that volunteering before he was drafted could give him more say in what happened next. At the time, he believed he was 17 years old and would be turning 18 in March 1943. But when he mentioned his plans to his mother, she reacted in a way he never expected.

An Ordinary Evening Took A Strange Turn

One evening, Van Dyke was helping his mother wash and dry the dishes in their kitchen. His father was away on business, and his younger brother had gone out to play, leaving Dick and Hazel alone. As they worked, Dick brought up his approaching eighteenth birthday and explained that he was thinking about enlisting. His mother suddenly stopped washing the dishes, dried her hands, and turned toward him with a serious expression.

She Made A Startling Confession

Hazel told Dick that she had something important to tell him, although he had no idea what was coming. Then she revealed that he was already 18 years old, despite everything he'd believed about his age. Van Dyke was stunned, struggling to understand how his mother could have kept something so basic from him throughout his childhood. But when he demanded an explanation, she offered a story that only made the situation stranger.

She Had An Unusual Explanation

According to Hazel, Dick had been born prematurely and experienced complications when he arrived. She even claimed that he'd been born without fingernails, an alarming detail that made the circumstances sound particularly serious. His parents had supposedly moved his birthday forward to the date when he would have been born at full term. It was an extraordinary explanation, but Dick wasn't entirely satisfied with what he'd heard.

He Wanted More Answers

Van Dyke naturally had questions about the complications his mother had described. Hazel assured him that he'd recovered and was perfectly healthy, but she didn't provide all the details he wanted. He couldn't understand why something so significant about his own birth had been kept from him for nearly 18 years. Fortunately, he knew someone who might be willing to tell him more.

He Turned To His Grandmother

Van Dyke's paternal grandmother had a reputation for being particularly straightforward. Unlike relatives who might soften an uncomfortable truth, she wasn't the type to dance around a difficult subject. Dick decided to visit her after school and ask what she remembered about his supposedly premature birth. He expected to hear more about the medical complications his mother had mentioned, but his grandmother's reaction was anything but reassuring.

She Didn't Believe A Word Of It

When Dick repeated his mother's explanation, his grandmother reacted with obvious disbelief. She wanted to know who had told him such a ridiculous story, and he explained that the information had come directly from Hazel. His grandmother then informed him that he hadn't been born prematurely at all. Suddenly, Dick realized that his mother's explanation had concealed something much more personal than an unusual birthday.

She Revealed The Real Secret

His grandmother explained that Hazel had become pregnant with Dick before marrying his father, Loren. In the conservative social climate of the 1920s, a pregnancy outside marriage could bring considerable embarrassment to a family. According to his grandmother, this was the real reason Dick had been given a different birthday. But learning the truth about his conception also raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his parents' marriage.

He Was The Reason They Married

Van Dyke later reflected on the possibility that his unexpected arrival had prompted his parents to marry. Nobody explicitly confirmed that this was why they had decided to wed, but Dick believed it was probably the case. What he'd always understood as an ordinary family history now looked considerably more complicated. And when he eventually spoke to his mother about what his grandmother had revealed, another surprising detail emerged.

His Mother Finally Admitted It

Hazel eventually confirmed that his grandmother had been telling the truth about the pregnancy. She acknowledged that she and Loren had discovered they were expecting a child before they married. But her confession went beyond explaining the altered birthday, because she also revealed that the couple had left their home in Illinois. Their destination was Missouri, where Dick would eventually be born.

His Parents Had Left Town

After discovering Hazel was pregnant, the couple traveled to Missouri, according to the account Van Dyke later shared in his autobiography. Dick was born in West Plains, Missouri, in 1925, rather than in Danville, where he would spend his childhood. After some time had passed, his parents returned to Illinois and settled back into their community. What Dick hadn't known was that the circumstances of that journey were connected to the secret surrounding his birth.

Their Journey Had A Deeper Meaning

The family's move to Missouri took on a different significance once Dick learned about the pregnancy. A 2018 report from Missouri public radio station KSMU described a local account suggesting that his parents had traveled to West Plains because of the circumstances surrounding his birth. That account also identified a hospital associated with caring for mothers who were unmarried, although Van Dyke's memoir doesn't establish that this was his parents' specific reason for choosing the town. Even without that additional detail, the journey was an important part of the family history his mother had concealed.

His Father Had Given Up A Different Life

Before settling into the responsibilities of marriage and fatherhood, Loren Van Dyke had pursued interests that were very different from his eventual career. He had played minor-league baseball and performed music, including saxophone and clarinet, in a jazz band. But supporting a growing family required a more dependable income, and Loren eventually worked as a traveling salesman for the Sunshine Cookie Company. Dick would later reflect on how much his father's life had changed after becoming a parent.

He Didn't Enjoy His Work

According to Van Dyke's recollections, his father wasn't particularly happy with his job selling cookies. The work frequently took Loren away from home, leaving Hazel to handle much of the family's day-to-day routine. For Dick, learning the circumstances surrounding his birth added another layer to his understanding of his father's responsibilities. But the most remarkable part of the story wasn't necessarily what his parents had done, because plenty of other people had known about it all along.

Almost Everyone Knew The Truth

Van Dyke later expressed amazement that the secret had survived for so many years without reaching him. He had grown up surrounded by a huge extended family, including grandparents, great-grandparents, and numerous cousins. At least some of those relatives apparently knew the circumstances surrounding his birth, yet nobody had told him. Somehow, in a community where family members seemed to be everywhere, Dick had remained completely unaware of his own history.

It Was A Different Time

Van Dyke understood that his parents had grown up in an era when an unmarried pregnancy could become a serious social scandal. In 1925, families often faced judgment for circumstances that many people today would regard as relatively ordinary. Even when Dick discovered the truth in 1943, the revelation still came as a genuine shock. Looking back decades later, however, he could appreciate the difference between his parents' world and the one in which he was telling their story.

He Didn't Turn Against His Mother

Despite discovering that Hazel had misled him about something so fundamental, Van Dyke continued to remember his mother with affection. In his autobiography, he described her as a warm, talkative woman who frequently entertained him with stories and conversation. His account of the birthday revelation was more amused and astonished than bitter. But while the mystery surrounding his birth had finally been explained, the military decision that started everything still had to be resolved.

He Faced Another Unexpected Problem

Van Dyke's newly discovered age didn't automatically make joining the Army Air Forces any easier. He was extremely thin for his height, and his attempts to enlist were initially unsuccessful because he was underweight. Despite his hopes of becoming a pilot, military service was proving considerably harder to enter than he'd anticipated. Eventually, he managed to join, although his assignment would take him somewhere very different from the cockpit of a fighter plane.

His Talents Changed His Future

During WWII, Van Dyke served in the Army Air Forces, working as a radio announcer before transferring to Special Services. There, he entertained troops in the United States rather than serving as a combat pilot overseas. His natural ability to perform proved valuable, giving him experience that would help shape his future career. The teenager whose military ambitions had exposed a family secret was now discovering the skills that would eventually make him famous.

He Took An Unusual Road To Stardom

After the war, Van Dyke pursued entertainment professionally, working in radio and eventually forming a comedy partnership with Phil Erickson. Their act, The Merry Mutes, featured pantomime and lip-synching routines that took them through nightclubs and onto television. The work was far removed from the military career he'd originally imagined for himself. But his willingness to take an unconventional path would eventually lead to one of the biggest opportunities of his life.

He Became An American Icon

Van Dyke's career took off when he landed the lead in the Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie, earning a Tony Award in 1961. He soon became a household name through The Dick Van Dyke Show, followed by beloved films including Mary Poppins and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. His performances established him as one of the most recognizable entertainers of his generation. Yet decades after becoming famous, he still had a remarkable personal story that many of his fans had never heard.

He Finally Told The World

In 2011, Van Dyke published his autobiography, My Lucky Life in and Out of Show Business, and chose to begin it with the story of his unexpected birthday revelation. Rather than opening with his Hollywood achievements, he returned to that evening in the kitchen when his mother told him he was older than he'd believed. He recounted his grandmother's blunt explanation and the circumstances surrounding his parents' marriage with characteristic humor. After nearly seven decades, a secret that had once been considered scandalous had become the opening chapter of his life story.

His Family Secret Became Part Of His Legacy

Van Dyke's publicly recognized birthday remains December 13, 1925, although his autobiography reveals that the date he grew up celebrating wasn't the one his parents originally knew. His account doesn't establish an independently verified replacement date, leaving that detail of his early life unresolved. What he did eventually uncover was a story of family expectations, a concealed pregnancy, and relatives who managed to keep the truth from him for nearly 18 years. And it all might have remained hidden much longer if a teenage Dick Van Dyke hadn't decided he wanted to join the Army.
