America’s Sweetheart Lived A Nightmare Behind Closed Doors
To movie audiences, Debbie Reynolds seemed to have everything. She was beautiful, talented, beloved, and one of Hollywood’s brightest stars. Yet while fans saw glamour and success, Reynolds endured decades of heartbreak, betrayal, financial devastation, and emotional pain through a series of marriages that often left her shattered.
Many cite Eddie Fisher as her worst husband, but there’s a chilling reason she called her third husband “the devil.”
Debbie Reynolds Became A Star Almost Overnight
Born Mary Frances Reynolds in Texas, she rose to fame after winning a beauty contest and signing with Warner Bros. Her cheerful personality and natural talent quickly made her one of Hollywood’s most promising young actresses during the postwar era. But it was only a matter of time before her personal woes cast a shadow over her happiness.
Singin' In The Rain Made Her A Legend
In 1952, Reynolds starred alongside Gene Kelly and Donald O’Connor in Singin’ in the Rain. The film became one of Hollywood’s most celebrated musicals and cemented her reputation as one of the industry's brightest young stars.
Three years later, she found her "happily ever after"...or, at least, she thought she had.

She Thought She Had Found The Perfect Husband
In 1955, Reynolds married singer Eddie Fisher. The couple quickly became one of Hollywood’s golden pairs. Young, attractive, and successful, they appeared to embody the fairy-tale romance that movie studios loved promoting to the public.
But not everything was as it seemed.
Then Elizabeth Taylor Entered The Picture
The friendship between Debbie Reynolds and Elizabeth Taylor was once considered extremely close. Reynolds even supported Taylor after the tragic death of Taylor’s husband, producer Mike Todd. Few could have predicted what would happen next.
Eddie Fisher Left Her For Her Best Friend
In one of Hollywood’s most infamous scandals, Fisher left Reynolds and their two children to pursue a relationship with Elizabeth Taylor. The betrayal dominated headlines worldwide and devastated Reynolds both personally and professionally. But that wasn't all.

The Scandal Humiliated Her Publicly
Millions of Americans sympathized with Reynolds as newspapers covered every detail of the breakup. While Taylor and Fisher faced criticism, Reynolds became the wronged wife in the public imagination, a role she never sought but could not escape.
Raising Carrie Fisher Became Her Priority
Following the divorce, Reynolds focused much of her attention on raising her children, Carrie Fisher and Todd Fisher. Yet the emotional wounds from Fisher’s betrayal remained with her for years. Sadly, there was only more heartache on the horizon.

Her Second Marriage Seemed More Stable
In 1960, Reynolds married businessman Harry Karl. Unlike Fisher, Karl wasn't a performer. Perhaps he could provide the stability that had been missing from her first marriage. Sadly, though, Karl created a different kind of nightmare for Reynolds.

Harry Karl Had A Dangerous Gambling Problem
What Reynolds did not appreciate was the extent of Karl’s gambling addiction. His compulsive betting habits eventually created enormous financial problems that threatened much of the wealth Reynolds had worked so hard to earn.
Millions Of Dollars Simply Disappeared
Karl reportedly lost staggering amounts of money through gambling. Reynolds later described watching fortunes vanish while trying desperately to keep her finances afloat. The losses placed enormous strain on their marriage and her personal life.
The Financial Damage Lasted For Years
By the time the marriage ended, Reynolds had suffered devastating financial consequences. Money she had earned through years of acting, singing, and touring had largely disappeared, creating problems she would spend decades trying to overcome.

Another Divorce Left Her Heartbroken
Reynolds eventually divorced Karl in 1973. Once again, a marriage she hoped would bring happiness instead ended in disappointment. The financial betrayal left lasting scars, and it was over a decade before she opened her heart to another man. Tragically, though, the third time down the aisle was not the charm.
Her Third Marriage Brought More Trouble
In 1984, Reynolds married real estate developer Richard Hamlett. She hoped the third time might finally be different. Unfortunately, the relationship would become another source of emotional and financial turmoil.
He Used Her For Her Money
Reynolds may have had passionate chemistry with Hamlett, but there was danger lurking in the wings. Hamlett dipped heavily into Reynolds' funds, using her money for his own real estate investments. But things got even dicier when he came up with a risky business proposal.
Pushed Into A Doomed Business Venture
Hamlett wanted Reynolds to purchase a hotel in Las Vegas that was on auction, and though she shelled out $200,000, she ultimately struggled to afford its extravagant price tag of around $2 million. She dreamed of creating a Hollywood museum and preserving entertainment history. Instead, it became a financial disaster that nearly ruined her.

Facing Bankruptcy
Against all odds, Reynolds somehow managed to open the hotel and casino in 1993. But just four years later, she had no choice but to declare bankruptcy. For a woman who had spent decades working relentlessly, the experience was humiliating and emotionally exhausting. The business venture was a total failure...and so was her marriage.
She'd Married A Cheater
Not long after the hotel opened, Hamlett betrayed Reynolds in the worst way possible. Not only did he have a mistress, but he went behind her back and added his name to the deed of her Bel Aire mansion. However, according to Reynolds' memoir, when she confronted him about his infidelity—his response was so terrifying, it's unforgettable.
She Was Scared Of Him
There's a reason Debbie Reynolds later described her third husband as "the devil". In her memoir, Reynolds recounted how Hamlett wanted to speak to her about his cheating on the balcony of the apartment, which seemed suspicious to her.
Hiding Herself Away
Debbie Reynolds wrote in her memoir, “I was sure he was going to toss me off the balcony. One shove and all his troubles would be over. I pictured myself plummeting twelve floors to the pavement".
Luckily, Reynolds had her wits about her and reportedly hid in her closet until he left the building.
Despite Everything, She Kept Working
Rather than disappear, Reynolds continued performing, touring, and acting. She often accepted projects because she genuinely needed the income. Her resilience became one of the most admired aspects of her later career.

Her Relationship With Carrie Fisher Became Complicated
Mother and daughter loved one another deeply, but their relationship was often strained by fame, addiction, and strong personalities. Over time, however, they developed a closeness that audiences found deeply moving.
Audiences Never Stopped Loving Her
Although her marriages repeatedly brought heartbreak, Reynolds remained one of Hollywood’s most beloved entertainers. Fans admired her professionalism and perseverance, even when her private life seemed consumed by disappointment.

Tragedy Struck At The End Of Her Life
In December 2016, Carrie Fisher died unexpectedly. Just one day later, Reynolds suffered a stroke and passed at age 84. Many family members later said Reynolds simply could not imagine life without her daughter.
Why Debbie Reynolds’ Story Still Resonates
Debbie Reynolds spent decades making audiences smile, yet her personal life was marked by betrayal, financial ruin, broken trust, and repeated heartbreak. Her story remains a reminder that even Hollywood’s brightest stars can suffer extraordinary pain behind the scenes.
