Revisiting The Ward
More than fifty years after One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) opened in theaters, the film remains one of Hollywood’s greatest achievements. While Jack Nicholson became inseparable from Randle McMurphy, the movie featured a remarkable ensemble of actors whose careers stretched across television, film, theater, and beyond.
Jack Nicholson
Jack Nicholson played the rebellious Randle Patrick McMurphy, a criminal who fakes mental illness to avoid prison labor. Already acclaimed for Easy Rider (1969) and Chinatown (1974), Nicholson won an Academy Award for the role and later starred in classics including The Shining (1980) and As Good as It Gets (1997).

Louise Fletcher
Louise Fletcher portrayed the cold and controlling Nurse Ratched, delivering one of cinema’s most memorable villainous performances. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress and later appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999). Fletcher died in 2022 at age 88.

William Redfield
William Redfield played Harding, the educated and articulate patient whose insecurities make him vulnerable to Nurse Ratched’s manipulation. Redfield had appeared in films including Fantastic Voyage (1966). He died from leukemia in 1976, only a year after the film’s release.

Will Sampson
Will Sampson portrayed Chief Bromden, whose quiet presence conceals tremendous strength and wisdom. A member of the Muscogee Nation, he later appeared in The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976) and Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986). Sampson died in 1987.

Brad Dourif
Brad Dourif earned an Academy Award nomination for his portrayal of the vulnerable Billy Bibbit. He later became famous for voicing Chucky in Child's Play (1988) and its sequels, while also appearing in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002).

Sydney Lassick
Sydney Lassick played the nervous and emotional Cheswick, one of the ward’s most sympathetic patients. Lassick later appeared in Carrie (1976) and The Unseen (1980). He continued to be a respected character actor until his death in 2003.

Christopher Lloyd
Christopher Lloyd portrayed the psychiatric patient Taber. Although relatively unknown at the time, he later became a household name as Doc Brown in Back to the Future (1985) and Reverend Jim on Taxi (1978–1983). Lloyd remains active as an actor today.

Danny DeVito
Danny DeVito played Martini, whose childlike behavior provided moments of humor amid the film’s tension. He later became one of Hollywood’s most recognizable stars through projects such as Taxi (1978–1983), Batman Returns (1992), and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2006–present). He also directed The War of the Roses (1989) and Hoffa (1992), the latter film which starred Jack Nicholson.

Vincent Schiavelli
Vincent Schiavelli portrayed Frederickson, one of the ward’s patients. Known for his distinctive appearance, he became a prolific character actor in films including Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982), Amadeus (1984), and Ghost (1990). Schiavelli died in 2005 from complications related to lung cancer.

Delos V. Smith Jr.
Delos V. Smith Jr. played Scanlon, the patient obsessed with fears of bombs and destruction. He had worked extensively in television before the film and later appeared in numerous guest roles. Smith died in 1996 after a long acting career.

Mwako Cumbuka
Mwako Cumbuka portrayed Warren, one of the patients under Nurse Ratched’s supervision. He later appeared in television series including Hill Street Blues (1981–1987) and Knots Landing (1979–1993). His steady career made him a familiar face to television audiences.

Nathan George
Nathan George played Washington, one of the ward attendants. Before the film, he appeared in productions such as Serpico (1973). He continued acting in film and television through the 1980s. George died in 2017 at the age of 81.

Michael Berryman
Michael Berryman portrayed Ellis, the silent patient who spends much of the film attached to a wall. His distinctive appearance led to memorable roles in The Hills Have Eyes (1977) and many horror productions. Berryman remains a respected cult-film icon.

Peter Brocco
Veteran character actor Peter Brocco played Colonel Matterson, the ward’s oldest patient. His career stretched back to the 1930s and included appearances in countless films and television programs. Brocco died in 1992 after decades as a dependable supporting performer.

Dean R. Brooks
Dean R. Brooks played Dr. Spivey, the institution’s superintendent. Unusually, Brooks was not primarily an actor but the real superintendent of Oregon State Hospital. His authentic presence helped ground the film’s realism. Brooks died in 2013 at age 96.

Alonzo Brown
Alonzo Brown appeared as Miller, one of the hospital attendants. Though his screen career was relatively limited, his role contributed to the realistic atmosphere of the institution. Like several supporting performers, he helped create the ensemble dynamic that defined the film.

Scatman Crothers
Scatman Crothers portrayed Turkle, the night orderly who helps McMurphy organize a memorable party. Already known as a musician and actor, he later appeared along with Nicholson in The Shining (1980). Crothers died in 1986 after a long and varied entertainment career.
Mews Small
Mews Small played Candy, one of the women who joins McMurphy’s escape-minded adventures. She later worked in film, television, and theater while also becoming known as a singer-songwriter. Her performance added warmth and humor to the film’s later scenes.
Josip Elic
Josip Elic portrayed Bancini, the patient who repeatedly insists he is tired. Born in Europe before immigrating to America, Elic built a career as a character actor in film and television. He died in 2024 at the age of 98.

Mimi Sarkisian
Mimi Sarkisian played Nurse Pilbow, one of the hospital staff members. Although she did not pursue a major Hollywood career afterward, her role became memorable thanks to several tense and comedic scenes involving the patients and staff.

Lan Fendors

Milos Forman
Director Milos Forman transformed Ken Kesey’s novel into a cinematic masterpiece, earning him that year's Academy Award for Best Director. After leaving communist Czechoslovakia, he built an acclaimed career that included Amadeus (1984) and The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996). Forman died in 2018 at age 86.
Michael Douglas
Producer Michael Douglas spent years bringing the project to the screen. The film rights had originally been secured by his father, Kirk Douglas, who starred in a stage adaptation. Jack Nicholson also pursued the rights at one point, but Michael ultimately shepherded the project into production after securing financing from Saul Zaentz. Douglas won an Academy Award for Best Picture as the film's producer.
