Stars Who Refused the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Stars Who Refused the Hollywood Walk of Fame

For decades, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame has been seen as a career milestone. But not every celebrity wants their name embedded in a busy stretch of Hollywood Boulevard. Here are the stars who chose not to walk that particular red carpet.

Greta Garbo

Greta Garbo, who famously said “I want to be alone,” avoided publicity throughout her life. During the decades when she was eligible, she never participated in or pursued a Walk of Fame ceremony. Given her lifelong refusal to attend public events or premieres, it’s widely understood that she had no interest in such recognition.

Katharine Hepburn

Katharine Hepburn was known for avoiding Hollywood spectacle altogether. During her lifetime, she did not attend award shows and rarely appeared at ceremonies. While eventually honored, she never personally participated in a Walk of Fame unveiling. Her disinterest in public recognition was consistent throughout her career.

Madonna was nominated in 1990 and declined the star. The Chamber publicly confirmed her decision at the time. She did not elaborate on her reasoning, but the refusal was explicit. Given her careful control over her public image, it appears she simply did not feel the honor aligned with her plans at the time.

A Celebration or Too Much Attention?

For some stars, the Walk of Fame is a celebration. For others, it’s unnecessary. Whether through quiet indifference, postponement, or direct refusal, these celebrities showed that not everyone wants their legacy set in concrete.
