Meryl Streep And Don Gummer Seemed Happily Married For Decades. Then, In 2023, They Revealed They'd Quietly Been Separated For More Than Six Years.

Nobody Saw It Coming

For decades, Meryl Streep and Don Gummer seemed to have one of Hollywood's rare success stories. They raised four children, attended countless major events together, and made it through Streep's transformation into one of the most celebrated actors alive. Then, in 2023, came a revelation almost nobody had expected: They had already been living separate lives for more than six years.

They Had Kept A Huge Secret

The surprise was not simply that Streep and Gummer had separated. It was that they had managed to keep the separation private since at least 2017, while the public continued thinking of them as a married couple. Even for two famously private people, keeping something that significant quiet for years was remarkable.

Their Story Had Started Very Differently

To understand why the announcement felt so unexpected, you have to go back to the beginning. Streep did not meet Gummer during a glamorous Hollywood romance or on a movie set. Their relationship grew out of one of the most painful periods of her life.

She Had Been Deeply In Love

Before Gummer, Streep was in a serious relationship with actor John Cazale, remembered for playing Fredo Corleone in The Godfather films. They met while appearing in a New York production of Measure for Measure and eventually lived together. Friends remembered them as an intensely close couple, but their time together would be tragically short.

Everything Changed

Cazale developed cancer while his career was still thriving, and Streep remained with him as his health deteriorated. They even appeared together in The Deer Hunter, which became his final film. Cazale died in March 1978, leaving Streep grieving just as her own movie career was beginning to accelerate.

Then She Needed Somewhere To Live

After Cazale's death, Streep eventually had to leave the apartment they had shared. Her brother helped her pack and brought along his friend Don Gummer, a sculptor. Gummer was about to travel, and Streep wound up staying in his apartment while he was away.

Don Came Home

When Gummer returned, Streep did not immediately leave. The two became close during a period when she was still dealing with enormous grief, and their friendship developed into something more. Within months, they had made an enormous decision.

They Married That Same Year

Streep and Gummer married on September 30, 1978, only months after Cazale's passing. Their courtship had been brief, particularly considering what Streep had just endured. From the outside, it could easily have looked like a relationship that had happened far too quickly.

It Lasted Far Longer Than Anyone Could Have Expected

Whatever doubts people may have had, the marriage kept going. Gummer continued his career as a sculptor while Streep's exploded with films including Kramer vs. Kramer and Sophie's Choice. Before long, this quickly formed relationship was beginning to look remarkably durable.

Their Family Grew

The couple welcomed four children: Henry Wolfe, Mamie Gummer, Grace Gummer, and Louisa Jacobson. Their children eventually pursued creative careers of their own, with Henry becoming a musician and his sisters working as actors. Despite Streep's enormous fame, the family maintained a comparatively private life.

Streep Put Home First

By the late 1990s, Streep was openly talking about how motherhood shaped the way she organized her career. She generally limited how much she worked and returned home between projects rather than allowing Hollywood to consume her life. Her family was not something she simply squeezed around her career.

They Stayed Away From The Hollywood Circus

The Gummers spent much of their family life in Connecticut rather than permanently living at the center of the Los Angeles celebrity scene. Streep spoke about appreciating a comparatively normal life away from Hollywood. That distance only strengthened the image of Streep and Gummer as the rare famous couple who had figured something out.

She Even Explained Their Secret

When Streep was asked in a 2002 interview what kept her marriage working, her answer was refreshingly practical. She cited "goodwill and willingness to bend," along with knowing when to keep quiet. Rather than describing some magical Hollywood romance, Streep made a long marriage sound like something that required constant compromise.

Don Was Usually Beside Her

Gummer never became a celebrity on Streep's level, but he frequently accompanied her to major public events. Photos from premieres, awards ceremonies, and galas gradually became a visual record of their marriage. The arrangement seemed to suit them: Streep occupied the spotlight, while Gummer appeared comfortable standing just outside its brightest glare.

Then Came Her Biggest Public Tribute

In 2012, Streep won her third Academy Award for The Iron Lady. Before thanking almost anyone else, she made a point of thanking Gummer because she did not want the orchestra cutting her off before she could get to him. She told him that everything she valued most in their lives had come from him.

It Sounded Like The Real Thing

The moment seemed to confirm everything outsiders thought they knew about the couple. They had been married for more than three decades, raised four children, and survived Streep's transformation into one of Hollywood's biggest stars. There was no obvious public sign of trouble. Yet within several years, Streep and Gummer would quietly make a decision that the public would not learn about until 2023.

The Public Story Stopped Matching Reality

Streep continued collecting major roles and awards, while Gummer remained largely outside celebrity culture. To outsiders, they were still one of Hollywood's enduring married couples. Behind the scenes, however, something had changed, and almost nobody outside their private circle seemed to realize it.

They Had Quietly Separated

Exactly what happened between Streep and Gummer has never been publicly explained in detail. What Streep's representative eventually confirmed is that by October 2023, they had been separated for more than six years, meaning they had apparently been living apart since at least 2017. There was no public accusation, dramatic interview, or obvious scandal attached to the split.

Yet They Were Still Seen Together

Making that timeline even more surprising, Streep and Gummer were still seen publicly together after the period when their separation apparently began. They attended the Academy Awards together in March 2018, which has since been identified as their last public appearance as a couple. Anyone watching them that night would have had little reason to suspect what had changed privately.

Then They Disappeared As A Pair

After the 2018 Oscars, Gummer became noticeably absent from Streep's public appearances. That alone was hardly proof of anything because the couple had always guarded their private life. Without an announcement or a public breakup, there was little reason for fans to assume their decades-long relationship had quietly changed.

The Truth Finally Came Out

In October 2023, Streep's representative finally confirmed what the public had missed for years. Gummer and Streep had been separated for "more than six years." After 45 years of marriage on paper, one of Hollywood's seemingly most enduring partnerships had already changed long before anyone outside their circle knew it.

Their Statement Was Strikingly Gentle

There was no angry statement and no attempt to blame either person. Streep's representative said the two would "always care for each other," but had "chosen lives apart." Those few words remain essentially the only official explanation the public has ever received.

She Was Still Wearing Her Ring

Adding another unexpected wrinkle, Streep was photographed wearing what appeared to be a wedding band around the time the separation became public. She wore the ring while receiving the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts in Spain in October 2023. Whatever personal meaning the ring may have carried was not publicly explained.

There Was No Public Divorce Battle

The announcement was not followed by a public war of words or a highly publicized divorce fight. Even subsequent coverage has continued to describe Streep and Gummer primarily as separated. After decades of protecting their home life from public scrutiny, even this enormous change remained remarkably private.

Then Another Man Entered The Headlines

After Streep joined Only Murders in the Building, her chemistry with co-star Martin Short attracted attention both onscreen and off. Their warm public appearances quickly inspired speculation that they might be romantically involved. But speculation was not the same thing as confirmation, and Short initially made his position very clear.

Short Denied The Romance

When the rumors intensified in 2024, Short said he and Streep were not a couple and described them instead as very close friends. Early reports likewise stressed that their friendship should not automatically be interpreted as a romance. Their closeness has continued to attract attention, but neither Streep nor Short has publicly offered a straightforward confirmation that they are a couple.

The Mystery Is What We Still Don't Know

There is no verified public story about betrayal, a dramatic final argument, or one explosive event that ended Streep and Gummer's marriage. All the public really knows is that a couple who spent decades building a family eventually decided to live separately, then kept that decision private for years. For two people who had always protected their home life, perhaps the biggest surprise is that they managed to change it much the same way they had lived it: largely on their own terms.

Their Marriage Was Still A Huge Part Of Their Lives

The 2023 revelation changed how outsiders understood the final years of Streep and Gummer's relationship, but it did not erase the decades that came before it. They raised four children, built careers in different artistic worlds, and stayed together through most of Streep's extraordinary rise. Their story turned out to be more complicated than the Hollywood fairy tale people had imagined, which may be exactly why the truth caught so many people off guard.
