Before Primetime, Daytime Had All The Drama
Before streaming binges and prestige dramas, daytime television had its own kind of appointment viewing. The 1980s turned soap stars into household names, fueled by glamorous weddings, outrageous secrets, irresistible supercouples, and cliffhangers that could dominate conversations for weeks. These women had the beauty and charisma to fill magazine covers, but their performances were what kept millions of viewers coming back.

Susan Lucci
Susan Lucci was already established as Erica Kane when the 1980s began, but the decade pushed her fame into another category. All My Children gave Erica romances, rivalries, marriages, and endless reinventions, while Lucci became increasingly famous for repeatedly earning Daytime Emmy nominations without taking home the trophy.

Genie Francis
Few daytime actresses were more closely associated with the soap boom than Genie Francis. As Laura Webber on General Hospital, she became half of Luke and Laura, whose November 1981 wedding drew roughly 30 million viewers and remains one of the most famous episodes in American soap history.

Deidre Hall
Deidre Hall had been playing psychiatrist Marlena Evans since 1976, but the 1980s transformed Marlena into one of Salem's defining heroines. Hall remained with Days of Our Lives until 1987, anchoring romances, family drama, danger, and the complicated identity story surrounding Roman Brady.

Melody Thomas Scott
Melody Thomas Scott took over the role of Nikki Reed on The Young and the Restless in 1979 and entered the 1980s ready for prime soap stardom. Nikki's transformation from troubled young woman to glamorous socialite culminated in her lavish 1984 wedding to Victor Newman.
Kim Zimmer
Kim Zimmer arrived on Guiding Light as Reva Shayne in November 1983 and quickly became one of daytime's most commanding personalities. Her work brought her Daytime Emmy victories during the decade, while Reva's turbulent relationship with Josh Lewis became central to the show.

Kristian Alfonso
Kristian Alfonso was only 19 when she took over the grown-up role of Hope Williams on Days of Our Lives in 1983. Her chemistry with Peter Reckell's Bo Brady turned Bo and Hope into a signature 1980s supercouple, complete with adventure, forbidden romance, and a memorable 1985 wedding.
Demi Moore
Long before becoming one of Hollywood's biggest movie stars, Demi Moore landed her first steady acting job on General Hospital. She joined in 1982 as reporter Jackie Templeton, entering the series just as producers faced the difficult task of continuing after the extraordinary Luke-and-Laura phenomenon.

Emma Samms
Emma Samms entered General Hospital in 1982 as British con woman Holly Sutton and was immediately placed opposite Anthony Geary's Luke Spencer. Holly later became romantically linked with Robert Scorpio, giving Samms a major place in the adventure-heavy storytelling that defined the soap during the decade.
Finola Hughes
Finola Hughes made her first appearance as Anna Devane in April 1985, and General Hospital quickly revealed that Anna was much more than a mysterious newcomer. She was Robert Scorpio's former wife, a onetime double agent, and the mother of the daughter Robert never knew he had.

Kristina Wagner, then credited as Kristina Malandro, arrived on General Hospital in September 1984 as Felicia Cummings. Her romance with Jack Wagner's Frisco Jones became another hugely popular pairing, mixing glamorous adventure stories with the emotional twists viewers expected from Port Charles.

Patsy Pease
Patsy Pease joined Days of Our Lives as Kimberly Brady in 1984 after previously appearing on Search for Tomorrow. Pairing Kimberly with Charles Shaughnessy's Shane Donovan proved especially successful, and Pease won a Soap Opera Digest Award for her leading performance in 1986.

Mary Beth Evans
Mary Beth Evans assumed the role of Kayla Brady in 1986, and it did not take long for Days of Our Lives to find television magic. Kayla's relationship with Stephen Nichols' Steve Johnson became one of the decade's most celebrated soap romances, leading to their 1988 wedding.
Melissa Reeves
Melissa Reeves made an early soap appearance on Santa Barbara before joining Days of Our Lives as Jennifer Horton in 1985. Still a teenager, Reeves helped establish Jennifer as a major young heroine whose romantic adventures would eventually make her one of Salem's longest-running favorites.
Lynn Herring
Lynn Herring debuted as Lucy Coe on General Hospital in 1986, initially presenting Lucy as a comparatively unassuming librarian. That image did not last. Lucy evolved into a glamorous schemer whose romances, ambition, and willingness to stir up trouble made Herring increasingly prominent.

Debbi Morgan

Nancy Lee Grahn
Nancy Lee Grahn debuted as attorney Julia Wainwright on Santa Barbara in 1985. The role became a major daytime breakthrough and brought Grahn the 1989 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress, an award she shared that year with All My Children star Debbi Morgan.
Julianne Moore
Julianne Moore arrived on As the World Turns in 1985 as Frannie Hughes and later took on the additional role of Frannie's half-sister Sabrina. Moore's early soap work earned her the 1988 Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Ingenue years before her celebrated film career began.

Anne Heche
Anne Heche joined Another World in 1987, playing twins Vicky Hudson and Marley Love. Handling the dual assignment gave the young actress unusually demanding material, and she quickly received recognition, including a Soap Opera Digest Award as Outstanding Female Newcomer.
