The Not So Nice Truth
Hollywood may be full of glitz and glam, but not every star shines bright behind the scenes. Some actors have gained a reputation not just for their talent, but for being downright impossible to work with. Whether it’s bizarre demands, ego clashes, or downright bad behavior, these stars have left a trail of frustrated directors, castmates, and crew in their wake.
Gwyneth Paltrow
Gwyneth Paltrow may be known for her Oscar win and GOOP empire, but she’s also known for being cold and distant on set. Reports from Spider-Man: Homecoming say she didn’t even remember working with Tom Holland. Others noted she often separated herself from the rest of the cast, leading to whispers that she’s “too good” for the job—at least in her own eyes.
Gene Kelly
You’d never guess from his smooth moves in Singin’ in the Rain, but Gene Kelly was reportedly a tyrant to work with. Debbie Reynolds once said filming the movie was one of the most miserable times of her life, thanks to Kelly’s perfectionism and harsh treatment. He demanded excellence—and if you didn’t deliver, you were in for it.
Tom Hardy
Tom Hardy’s talent is undeniable, but so is his temper. During Mad Max: Fury Road, he clashed famously with co-star Charlize Theron. Theron described the tension as intense and uncomfortable. Hardy has also had on-set spats with directors and stormed off sets. He brings intensity to his roles—but sometimes a bit too much.

Justin Bieber
Yes, he’s technically more of a pop star, but Bieber’s forays into acting and public behavior have earned him a spot on this list. From showing up late to appearances to treating staff poorly, the Biebs has racked up quite the reputation for bratty antics and diva demands—even banning fans from speaking to him at times.

Hugh Grant
British charm can only go so far. Hugh Grant has admitted to being a grump, and that’s putting it mildly. He’s been called rude, irritable, and prone to sarcastic jabs that make co-stars uncomfortable. Director Jon Stewart described him as “the worst guest we’ve ever had” on The Daily Show. That’s not the kind of rom-com energy we expected.

Tom Cruise
Tom Cruise is one of Hollywood’s most powerful stars—and he knows it. Reports from Mission: Impossible sets describe Cruise as intense, micromanaging, and unwilling to accept anything but perfection. During COVID, he made headlines for screaming at crew members who weren’t following safety protocols. Passionate or power-tripping? You decide.
Gene Hackman
Gene Hackman’s impressive career includes some very impressive feuds. He was notorious for belittling crew members and shouting at co-stars. Even Wes Anderson, the king of quirky calm, reportedly found him “difficult” during The Royal Tenenbaums. Hackman’s gruffness wasn’t just a character trait—it was a lifestyle.

James Franco
James Franco has become a controversial figure both on and off set. Co-stars have accused him of being unprofessional, flirtatious to the point of discomfort, and erratic. He’s also been accused of giving unclear direction while wearing his “director” hat—often confusing cast and crew. Sometimes it seems like even he doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Daniel Day-Lewis
Daniel Day-Lewis is the king of method acting, and that’s not always a good thing. On the set of My Left Foot, he stayed in character even when the cameras stopped, demanding to be spoon-fed and carried around. His level of commitment is unmatched, but many find it exhausting. Art? Yes. Easy to work with? Absolutely not.

Dustin Hoffman
Hoffman is a legend, but stories from the set paint a different picture. He’s been accused of being overbearing, confrontational, and even inappropriate, with several allegations of harassment. He clashed with directors like Sydney Pollack and actors like Meryl Streep, making collaboration a test of patience.
Faye Dunaway
If there were an Oscar for most difficult actress, Faye Dunaway might win it. She’s known for explosive tantrums, refusing to take direction, and having major fallouts with co-stars. On Mommie Dearest, she reportedly threw things at crew members and terrorized makeup artists. Ironically, she may have channeled her real self a little too well.

Jared Leto
Jared Leto’s method madness is infamous. For one well known “squad” movie, he sent rats, condoms, and used bullets to co-stars—all in the name of becoming the Joker. Some called it dedication; others called it harassment. Either way, it made for a very tense set experience.

Bill Murray
Bill Murray’s sense of humor can be charming—or chaotic. He’s had legendary spats with co-stars like Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels) and directors like Harold Ramis (Groundhog Day). Some call him unpredictable and aloof. Others call him a straight-up headache. Either way, you never know what Bill you’re going to get.

Alec Baldwin
From punching photographers to screaming voicemails, Baldwin’s off-screen behavior often overshadows his acting. On set, he’s been known to lash out, argue with directors, and be short with crew. His sharp wit doesn’t always land as funny—and his temper has cost him more than a few gigs.
Thomas Gibson
Thomas Gibson was once a Criminal Minds staple—until he kicked a writer. Literally. The altercation led to his firing from the show. Co-workers described him as short-tempered and difficult, with multiple clashes leading up to the incident. Apparently, you don’t want to give this guy a bad script note.
Marlon Brando
Brando may be a cinematic icon, but he was also infamous for being lazy and impossible to direct. He refused to memorize lines, often had cue cards hidden around the set, and made bizarre demands (like having an actor wear an earpiece to feed him lines). Directors respected his genius—but dreaded his ego.
Joan Crawford
A classic Hollywood diva, Joan Crawford’s feuds were the stuff of legend. She demanded absurd luxuries, manipulated directors, and waged all-out war on co-stars like Bette Davis. Some say her icy stare could freeze a studio exec in place. She made high-maintenance an art form.

Chevy Chase
Chevy Chase’s comedic talent is undeniable—but so is his bad attitude. From SNL blowups to being written off Community early, his mean-spirited jokes and unpredictable rants have made him persona non grata in many comedy circles. Even his co-stars admit: he's just not a team player.

Sean Penn
Sean Penn brings the intensity, both in his acting and his outbursts. He’s gotten physical with paparazzi, yelled at reporters, and even stormed off sets mid-production. While his performances earn praise, his behavior often garners groans. You will get an Oscar-worthy monologue—but it might come with a side of rage.

Christian Bale
Bale’s explosive meltdown on the set of Terminator Salvation—where he screamed at a crew member—went viral for a reason. Though he later apologized, many insiders claim that wasn't an isolated incident. He’s known for being moody, demanding, and so deep into his roles that he becomes unbearable off-camera.

Lea Michele
Lea Michele's sunny on-screen presence in Glee masked a stormier backstage reality. Multiple co-stars accused her of creating an uncomfortable environment, with insensitive remarks and general diva behavior. After being called out, she apologized—but her reputation as a “mean girl” still lingers.

Julia Roberts
America’s sweetheart? Not always. Julia Roberts has had a few diva moments, including clashing with cinematographers and even earning the nickname “Tinkerhell” while filming Hook. Though she’s largely professional, several sources claim she has an on-and-off switch—either delightful or a nightmare in heels.
