Smiles Onscreen, Storms Offscreen
Audiences love a good buddy act, but not every screen partnership survives outside the frame. Offscreen drama is known to push friendships to the brink, straining relationships in such a way that you wonder how they even made it work for so long.
Sarah Jessica Parker And Kim Cattrall
Cattrall chose not to return for And Just Like That by explaining she felt done with the franchise and citing a toxic relationship. In 2018, she accused Parker of exploiting her bereavement. Claims of separate dressing rooms circulated, though these reports remain unverified.

Clayne Crawford And Damon Wayans
Crawford's on-set behavior sparked repeated complaints, one filed by Wayans. Audio caught him berating the crew, and Wayans later shared injury photos, blaming him. The turmoil overshadowed Lethal Weapon. Producers replaced Crawford mid-series, but then ratings dropped sharply, and the show's fate was sealed.
Julianna Margulies And Archie Panjabi
Viewers anticipated a proper goodbye, but The Good Wife instead stitched together their last meeting with digital tricks. Margulies said Panjabi was busy filming elsewhere, but Panjabi replied online that she was in New York and available. Her rebuttal deepened suspicion, even as she earned an Emmy.
CBS, The Good Wife (2009-2016)
William Shatner And George Takei
On Star Trek, teamwork looked natural. Offscreen, George Takei accused William Shatner of hogging the spotlight, to which Shatner retaliated by calling him disturbed. Their feud stretched across decades and conventions. Leonard Nimoy, their Star Trek co-star known for Spock, attempted reconciliation, but to no avail.
Paramount Global, Star Trek (1966-1969)
Freddie Prinze Jr And Kiefer Sutherland
Prinze Jr said he admired Sutherland's acting but couldn't stand the atmosphere he created. Calling him difficult and unprofessional, he said the job nearly destroyed his career. The denial from Sutherland's camp did little to change his verdict on 24.

Bruce Willis And Cybill Shepherd
On Moonlighting, sparks onscreen came with real tension behind the camera. Willis and Shepherd clashed over personalities and schedules, which led to frequent production delays. Producer Jay Daniel often mediated these disputes. Shepherd later admitted they sometimes got on each other’s nerves, but both knew that it was their chemistry that made the show.

Nathan Fillion And Stana Katic
Reports claimed Nathan Fillion bullied Stana Katic, shaking the harmony behind the smiles of Castle. ABC denied that the budget was the reason for her departure, which only stirred more suspicion. Fillion avoided specifics by offering good wishes, as the show limped to a shortened end.

Patrick Dempsey And Isaiah Washington
The Grey's Anatomy set erupted after Washington hurled a homophobic slur during a clash with Dempsey. HR stepped in, apologies followed, yet scars lingered. Washington later called Dempsey difficult, and although he returned briefly in Season 10, they never shared scenes. Dempsey's own exit carried tensions on the way out.

Teri Hatcher And Marcia Cross
Crew whispers painted Hatcher as the most difficult cast member, despite her top paycheck. Longoria revealed she was excluded from group texts, and Cross allegedly fought with her over scripts. Even at a Vanity Fair shoot, colleagues avoided standing near her during Desperate Housewives.
Jackie Gleason And Art Carney
Comedy magic on The Honeymooners hid distance backstage. Gleason gave Carney little credit by stifling his improvisation, while Carney skipped Gleason's tributes out of bitterness. Ironically, he later won an Oscar for Harry and Tonto, a part that Gleason turned down.

Alyssa Milano And Rose McGowan
Twitter (now X) became a battleground when McGowan accused Milano of hijacking #MeToo by branding her a fraud. Crew members remembered icy tension on Charmed, where McGowan replaced Doherty after another clash. Milano later admitted heartbreak over the feud, saying she never intended for their relationship to be torn apart by public attacks.

Zendaya And Bella Thorne
Thorne confessed that constant comparisons to Zendaya bred resentment, so to reduce friction, Disney scheduled separate tours. In later years, Zendaya explained they had matured beyond the rivalry. The tension no longer mattered once both stars launched their careers after Shake It Up.

Debra Winger And Shirley MacLaine
A notorious prank (involving a fart) sparked lasting on-set tension between Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger on Terms of Endearment. MacLaine called Winger difficult, and their disagreements multiplied. When awards season arrived, both vied for Best Actress, with director James L Brooks acknowledging the competition sprang from repeated clashes.
Paramount Pictures, Terms of Endearment (1983)
Chevy Chase And Donald Glover
On Community, Chase caused discomfort by making racially insensitive remarks toward Glover. Instead of confronting him, Glover embedded subtle responses in his scripts. Creator Dan Harmon later confirmed Chase's behavior was offensive, and when Chase eventually left, Glover's once-small role expanded into a fan favorite.
Julia Roberts And Nick Nolte
Hollywood hoped Roberts and Nolte would radiate romantic charm. However, they bickered constantly. Roberts mocked his habits; Nolte retaliated by questioning her kindness. The tension overshadowed their movie, I Love Trouble. Reflecting later, Nolte softened and accepted responsibility for making the feud worse than necessary.

Will Smith And Janet Hubert
Creative conflicts and feelings of being sidelined led Janet Hubert to leave The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in its third season. Branded "difficult" by Will Smith, her reputation suffered. Decades later, the pair reconciled in a reunion, where Hubert shared her hardships and Smith owned up to his immaturity.

Robert Reed And Florence Henderson
Reed's private life and dedication to performance were later acknowledged by Florence Henderson with admiration. Yet during The Brady Bunch, his classical training collided with lighthearted scripts. Henderson recalled his moods disturbing the set, and a final dispute left him out of the last episode.

Bea Arthur And Betty White
Despite sharing seven years on set, Arthur and White hardly connected beyond work. Arthur complained about White's bubbly demeanor by calling her a pain. But the twist was sharp: White, the target of her annoyance, became the sole Emmy winner from The Golden Girls for that first season.
Disney, The Golden Girls (1985-1992)
Penny Marshall And Cindy Williams
When it reached peak success, Laverne & Shirley outdrew Happy Days in popularity. Behind the scenes, Williams left mid-season during pregnancy and later even sued Paramount. Reports suggested Marshall sided with producers, which was followed by years of silence between the former friends.

David Duchovny And Gillian Anderson
Exhaustion during filming reduced David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson's communication to silence. He once compared their strained bond to a loveless marriage. For years, they avoided joint interviews. Reconciliation arrived with the revival of The X-Files, long after outrage over Anderson's lower pay in earlier seasons.
Fox Broadcasting Company, The X-Files (1993-2022)
Lucille Ball And Vivian Vance
Vance disliked being styled as frumpy beside her co-star, especially since they were close in age, but Ball insisted she wear padding to look heavier. Though tensions began early, Lucie Arnaz (Ball’s daughter) recalled their friendship as sisterly, which is probably why the audience adored them on I Love Lucy.
Tony Curtis And Roger Moore
Curtis's lateness and drinking clashed with Moore's formality, which created friction on The Persuaders!. Moore later described him as unprofessional in his memoir, too. Cultural divides sharpened the split; however, despite the cancellation, the program won a loyal European following.
ITV, The Persuaders! (1971-1972)
Melissa Gilbert And Alison Arngrim
Life on Little House on the Prairie wasn't all warm nostalgia because Gilbert admitted jealousy toward Arngrim, who played the despised Nellie Oleson. Arngrim also described their relationship as a cold war, but with time, they ended up bonding over shared childhood struggles.
Lionsgate Home Entertainment, Little House on the Prairie (1974-1983)
Shannen Doherty And Jennie Garth
Tempers once rose so high that they almost led to punches. Garth admitted to that, and producers confirmed spats were common between the two. The turmoil overshadowed much of Beverly Hills, 90210, so much so that complaints pushed Doherty out, and still, the atmosphere never fully settled.
Paramount Pictures, Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990-2000)
Shelley Long And Ted Danson
Behind the bar at Cheers, sparks flew onscreen but not always off. Long's detailed preparation clashed with Danson's relaxed methods by stretching rehearsals and rewrites thin. Even Danson admitted working together was tough, though respectful. Still, their dynamic helped the sitcom dominate the 80s and collect multiple Emmy wins.
