TV Shows Baby Boomers Really Love That Millennials Really Don't

When Generations Don’t Channel the Same Energy

TV tastes don’t just change—they do somersaults. While Baby Boomers still binge shows that feel like warm hugs, millennials are often reaching for the remote in confusion (or horror).

What one generation calls a classic, the other calls cringe. From slow-burn Westerns to super-procedural crime shows, here are the series Boomers still love—but millennials would rather leave in the past.

"NCIS" (2003–present)

Boomers can’t get enough of Gibbs’s no-nonsense leadership and those perfectly wrapped-up cases. NCIS delivers what they want: justice, loyalty, and rules. Millennials, however, find it too formulaic and repetitive, with one too many zingers after examining a dead body.

"Blue Bloods" (2010–present)

Tom Selleck + family dinners + cop drama = Boomer gold. The show’s old-school values and emphasis on right vs. wrong resonate with older viewers. Millennials often find it preachy, out of touch, and not reflective of the complexities of today’s world.

"The Love Boat" (1977–1986)

Romance on the open sea? Boomers were all in. Each episode brought new guests, lighthearted plots, and plenty of hugs. Millennials mostly just ask, “Why is everyone falling in love after two cocktails?” and abandon ship before the credits roll.

"The Andy Griffith Show" (1960–1968)

Mayberry’s slow-paced charm and aw-shucks wisdom tug at Boomer heartstrings. Millennials? They often find the whole vibe too squeaky clean, like a town where nothing real ever happens… except whistling.

"Last Man Standing" (2011–2021)

Tim Allen’s conservative dad vs. millennial daughters dynamic hit home with Boomers. Millennials found it eye-roll-inducing, with jokes that feel like they were plucked from 2010 Facebook memes (and most of them aren't even on Facebook anymore either).

"NCIS: Los Angeles" (2009–2023)

Boomers liked the sunny setting and military lingo. Millennials thought NCIS: LA was like NCIS, but louder, sweatier, and somehow even more forgettable.

"Touched by an Angel" (1994–2003)

Angels, gentle life lessons, and warm endings—Boomers found it healing. Millennials often find Touched by an Angel corny and overly sentimental, like someone turned a greeting card into a drama.

"Matlock" (1986–1995)

Andy Griffith as a wily Southern lawyer? Boomers were hooked from the start. Millennials are less impressed, often describing it as slow-moving courtroom cosplay where everyone is somehow guilty—although never the defendant for some reason.

"Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman" (1993–1998)

Frontier feminism and moral drama? Boomers say yes, please. Millennials say: Is this a drama or a history lesson with too much horse brushing? The younger generation often checks out after one too many flute-heavy montages.

"JAG" (1995–2005)

Military courtrooms and sharp uniforms made JAG a Boomer favorite. For millennials, though, it’s a procedural slog with too much patriotism and not enough personality. And given that NCIS was a spin-off of this series, it makes sense both shows are on this list.

"Murder, She Wrote" (1984–1996)

Boomers consider Jessica Fletcher a national treasure. Millennials, however, often joke that she’s the real killer, and often find the show’s pacing leisurely to the point of nap-inducing.

"The Beverly Hillbillies" (1962–1971)

Boomers laughed hard at the fish-out-of-water antics. Millennials mostly cringe at the dated humor and over-the-top caricatures, wondering how this aired in prime time for so long. If they're going to watch a show set in Beverly Hills it's gonna be The Real Housewives.

"Evening Shade" (1990–1994)

Burt Reynolds in a sleepy Southern town? Boomers loved the down-home charm (They love those sleepy towns don't they?). Millennials often ask, “Wait, what is this?”—before quietly switching back to something with dragons or therapists.

"Coach" (1989–1997)

Boomers loved the grumpy football coach with a soft heart. Millennials think Coach is...fine, but kind of forgettable and built on sports jokes that don’t always land.

"The King of Queens" (1998–2007)

Boomers saw themselves in Doug and Carrie’s messy marriage. Millennials? They’re over the “lazy guy, attractive wife” trope and call it just another recycled sitcom setup.

"Reba" (2001–2007)

Reba McEntire’s Southern sass and single-mom strength made the show a hit with Boomers. Millennials appreciate Reba—but often find the humor a little too on-the-nose and the conflicts conveniently tidy.

"Castle" (2009–2016)

Boomers enjoyed the flirty banter and case-of-the-week setup. Millennials gave it a shot, then bailed when the will-they-won’t-they became "just get on with it already." Bonus cringe: the ending.

"Bones" (2005–2017)

Boomers were hooked on the science, the snark, and the slow-burn romance. Millennials liked it—for a while—but many found the show got too quirky for its own good, especially in later seasons.

"Magnum P.I. (1980–1988)"

Boomers adored Tom Selleck’s mustache and island adventures. Millennials? They’re more likely to recognize the theme song from Archer and call the show style over substance.

"The Middle" (2009–2018)

Boomers appreciated the realistic portrayal of a working-class family. Millennials often found it a bit bland, especially compared to the snappier dialogue of shows like Modern Family.

"7th Heaven" (1996–2007)

Boomers liked its wholesome vibe. Millennials found it painfully preachy, and the later real-life controversies sure didn’t help its reputation either (with Boomers or Millennials actually).

"Two and a Half Men" (2003–2015)

Charlie Sheen’s womanizing and the show’s relentless innuendo worked for Boomers. Millennials? Not so much. The humor feels lazy and repetitive, and the canned laughter doesn’t help.

"The Big Bang Theory" (2007–2019)

Boomers loved the geeky guys and one-liners. Millennials often say, “It’s not nerdy—it’s just loud.” The show’s laugh track and stereotyping rubbed many the wrong way.

"CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (2000–2015)

Boomers were fascinated by the science and structure. Millennials grew up with it—but often dropped off, calling it glossy and emotionally flat, despite the forensics fireworks.

"Young Sheldon" (2017–present)

Boomers enjoy the precocious charm of Young Sheldon and its throwback family dynamic. Millennials, especially fans of The Big Bang Theory, often find the tone jarring and the jokes more forced than funny. It’s a spinoff that doesn’t always resonate with younger viewers.

"The Good Doctor" (2017–present)

The Good Doctor hits Boomer sweet spots with its medical miracles and moral lessons. Millennials, however, often find the emotional tone overwrought, and question the show’s portrayal of neurodiversity. It's heartfelt—but also a bit heavy-handed.
